The TREATS Checklist

Since 2024, hundreds of users have downloaded TREATS. Thank you to everyone who has used TREATS and the accompanying Explanatory document.

Updated versions are now available in PDF, Word, and A4 form. With feedback and careful consideration, the scoring system has been removed from the current version. Please check the version you are using to ensure you have the most up-to-date documents (Updated 3/2026).

Transparent Reporting for TREATS & the TREATS-RG

In this short video, we explain more about the Transparent Reporting for Essential oil & Aroma Therapeutic Studies Checklist (TREATS) and the TREATS-RG (Reporting Guideline). Feel free to skip to sections that will help you use these tools.

The best way to learn how to use these tools is to simply download them, grab a research article, start reading, and take notes. It is amazing what you will see when you look for the details with a checklist. Let us know your experience by emailing us at info@arqat.org

We would love to hear from you!

ARQAT Translation Policy

The purpose of our translation policy is to ensure that the translation of any Aromatic Research Quality Appraisal Taskforce (ARQAT) document (i.e. ARQAT TREATS, ARQAT explanatory paper, ARQAT White Paper, ARQAT TREATS-RG or any other document produced by ARQAT) accurately reflects the collaborative expertise of the ARQAT. The ARQAT only fully endorses "official" translations of the ARQAT documents which have followed our translation policy.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns about our translation policy and process.

Official ARQAT document translations must meet the following criteria:
● Developed using the most up-to-date version of the ARQAT document
● Developed in collaboration with the ARQAT
● Follows the steps of translation described below
● If the translation is published, original ARQAT authors will maintain primary
authorship and translators will follow the authorship policy of the journal

Steps for ARQAT Document Translation

Step 1: Establish contact with ARQAT (info@arqat.org) and select which ARQAT document you wish to translate.

Step 2: Complete a draft of the translation of the selected ARQAT document (use the most up-to-date document found on the ARQAT website https://www.arqat.org)

Step 3: Send back the translated ARQAT document(s) to us for review. We will back-translate and compare with the original English document. Please note: it is important that the translation be as close to the original English version as possible since the wording of the document was carefully and purposefully selected by the ARQAT based on a consensus process.

Step 4: We will provide feedback on any items that need revision.

Step 5: If necessary, revise translated documents based on feedback. This step may entail one or more iterations to ensure that wording of the translation is as accurate as possible.

Step 6: Disseminate the completed translation. While the translation will be posted to the ARQAT website for users of the selected language to access freely, we encourage translators to seek publication of their translation in an open-access journal. While ARQAT authors will retain primary authorship on the translated document, translators will be listed in the acknowledgements section of the article as well as on a secondary author byline where permitted by journals (i.e. under the author line, state “Translated by xxx”). Translators are encouraged to write an accompanying editorial which may be done in collaboration with one or more of the authors of the original ARQAT document,if desired. All official translations of ARQAT documents will be announced and posted on the ARQAT website.
